Powracający z wojny dwaj bracia składają przyrzeczenie pozostania w kawalerskim stanie, ale kiedy poznają piękne panny z sąsiedniego dworu, trudno im będzie dotrzymać obietnicy... Premierowe wykonanie Strasznego dworu odbyło się w Warszawie we wrześniu 1865 roku i nic dziwnego, że ta będąca syntezą staropolskiej kultury, przywołująca temat świetności XVIII-wiecznej Polski opera wywołała wtedy prawdziwą manifestację patriotyczną wśród zgromadzonej publiczności.

The premiere of The Haunted Manor took place in Warsaw in September 1865, and it’s no surprise that this opera — a synthesis of Old Polish culture and a tribute to the glory of 18th- century Poland — sparked a true patriotic demonstration among the audience at the time.
