La Bohème Cyganeria

„...świeżość, młodość, namiętność, wesołość, łzy wylane w milczeniu, miłość, która daje radość i każe cierpieć.” – pisał Puccini o temacie idealnym dla opery, który znalazł w powieści Murgera „Sceny z życia cyganerii”, bliskiej mu przez doświadczenia kilku własnych studencko-artystycznych lat w mediolańskim konserwatorium. Wytrawny duet: Giacosa i Illica wyczarował z tego materiału, nie bez ingerencji samego kompozytora, znakomite libretto. Ten zaś narzucił opowieści o życiu paryskiej bohemy doskonale przylegającą do sytuacji melodyjną frazę, wykazując się mistrzostwem w budowaniu nastroju, budzeniu tęsknot, wzruszaniu. Mieszkańcy ubogiej mansardy porzucą wkrótce artystowskie przestrzenie, wkroczą w życie, gdzie rządzą inne prawa. Na razie jednak przeżywają pierwszą miłość, pierwsze związane z nią komplikacje i pierwsze w ich życiu nieszczęście - śmierć, która zapowiada koniec pięknej zabawy, koniec beztroski, pożegnanie z młodością. Ale o tym jeszcze nie rozmyślajmy, o tym zapomnijmy poddając się radosnemu nastrojowi walca Musetty,  albo słuchając wabienia głównej bohaterki „Si, mi chiamano Mimi” (Tak, nazywają mnie Mimi”) i śmiałego uwodzenia Rodolfa „Che gelida manina” („Ta rączka taka zimna”). Tak będzie lepiej.

“…freshness, youth, passion, cheerfulness, tears shed in silence, love that brings joy and forces one to suffer.” – Puccini wrote this about a theme ideal for opera, which he found in Murger’s novel Scenes from the Bohemian Life, close to him through his own experiences during several student-artistic years at the Milan Conservatory.

The seasoned duo Giacosa and Illica transformed this material, not without the composer’s own input, into an outstanding libretto. Puccini, in turn, gave the story of Parisian bohemian life a perfectly fitting melodic phrase, demonstrating mastery in creating mood, evoking longing, and stirring emotions.

The inhabitants of the humble attic will soon leave their artistic spaces and step into a life governed by different rules. For now, however, they are experiencing first love, the first complications it brings, and the first misfortune of their lives – death, which foreshadows the end of joyful play, the end of carefreeness, a farewell to youth.

But let us not dwell on that yet; let us forget it for now and surrender to the joyful mood of Musetta’s waltz, or listen to the main heroine’s alluring call “Si, mi chiamano Mimi” (“Yes, they call me Mimi”) and Rodolfo’s bold seduction “Che gelida manina” (“What a cold little hand”). That will be better.
