Hełmy w zbiorach Zamku Królewskiego na Wawelu/ Helmets in the Collection of the Royal Castle in Wawel

Styczniowe spotkanie w ramach Wawelskiego Salonu Książki będzie poświęcone publikacji „Hełmy w zbiorach Zamku Królewskiego na Wawelu” autorstwa Krzysztofa J. Czyżewskiego, wieloletniego kuratora wawelskiej kolekcji militariów.
Ten katalog prezentuje część zbiorów Zbrojowni, której nową, spektakularną odsłonę Zamek Królewski na Wawelu udostępnił zwiedzającym niedawno – pod koniec listopada 2025 roku.
W publikacji zaprezentowano 98 zabytków, a wśród nich kilka unikalnych, jak szyszak wschodni z około XIV wieku, włoska barbuta, późnogotycka salada, złocone szyszaki należące do ekskluzywnych wytworów sztuki płatnerskiej czy szturmak związany z dworem króla Francji Henryka II. Wielką rzadkością kolekcji są maski Turków stosowane podczas turniejów husarskich organizowanych na praskim dworze Ferdynanda II Tyrolskiego. Do klasycznego uzbrojenia bojowego i reprezentacyjnego dołączono też maski hańby.
Prezentowany wawelski zbiór jest niezwykle cenny ze względu na swoje wysokie walory historyczne i artystyczne. Rozpiętość chronologiczna jest znaczna: najstarszy zabytek powstał około 600 roku p.n.e., najnowszy pochodzi z okresu I wojny światowej. Większość hełmów datuje się na późne średniowiecze i nowożytność, w tym gros na stulecia XVI i XVII. Styczniowy Salon Książki będzie okazją do rozmowy z Autorem katalogu, który potrafi zajmująco opowiadać i jest kopalnią wiedzy, nie tylko z dziedziny sztuki militarnej. A dla tych, którzy jeszcze nie widzieli nowej Zbrojowni, będzie to zachęta do jej odwiedzenia. Efektownie zaprojektowania przestrzeń ekspozycji porwie zapewne swoim pięknem nie tylko miłośników militariów.

The January meeting of the Wawel Book Salon will be dedicated to the publication “Helmets in the Collection of the Royal Castle in Wawel” by Krzysztof J. Czyżewski, the long-time curator of the Wawel collection of military artifacts.

This catalogue presents part of the Armory’s collection, whose new spectacular exhibition was recently opened to visitors by the Royal Castle in Wawel at the end of November 2025.

The publication features 98 artifacts, including several unique pieces such as an Eastern barbute helmet from around the 14th century, an Italian barbuta, a late Gothic sallet, gilded helmets representing exclusive examples of the art of armor-making, and a sturmach associated with the court of King Henry II of France. A major rarity in the collection is the Turkish masks used during hussar tournaments organized at the Prague court of Ferdinand II of Tyrol. In addition to classic combat and ceremonial armament, the catalogue also includes masks of shame.

The Wawel collection is extremely valuable due to its high historical and artistic significance. The chronological range is considerable: the oldest artifact dates from around 600 BCE, while the newest comes from the World War I era. Most helmets are dated to the late Middle Ages and the early modern period, with the majority belonging to the 16th and 17th centuries.

The January Book Salon will be an opportunity to talk with the author of the catalogue, who is not only a fascinating storyteller but also a veritable treasure trove of knowledge, not only in the field of military art. For those who have not yet seen the new Armory exhibition, it will be an invitation to visit. The impressively designed exhibition space is sure to captivate with its beauty not only lovers of military history.
