The protagonists of RENT are eccentrics who, in the heart of New York’s East Village, face poverty, exclusion, drug addiction, and the AIDS epidemic on a daily basis. The show is a tribute to the modern bohemian community—one that values creativity, individuality, and independence over material gain, and for whom love is the most important measure of life.
Although the action of the musical is set in a specific historical moment, its universal themes, social awareness, diversity of characters, and the emotional depth of its songs allow the production to resonate with audiences across generations.
