Carmina Burana

Przez jednych nazywane kantatami scenicznymi, innych oratorium, „Carmina Burana” oparte są na świeckich pieśniach średniowiecznych, odnalezionych w 1803 r. w bawarskim opactwie Benediktbeuren. Carl Orff wybrał z tego obszernego zbioru tekstów, stworzonych przez wagabundów, studentów i wędrownych kleryków, 24 pieśni i ułożył je w rodzaj libretta. Pierwsza część to pieśni sławiące naturę i budzącą się wiosnę, druga jest pochwałą Bachusa, trzecia mówi o rozkoszach miłości. Mottem całego utworu jest apoteoza życia i afirmacja świata. Tylko zgoda na porządek i ład panujący w makrokosmosie pozwoli człowiekowi zachować czystość duszy i żyć zgodnie z naturą.

Called a stage cantata by some, an oratorio by others, 'Carmina Burana' is based on secular medieval songs found in 1803 in the Bavarian abbey of Benediktbeuren. Carl Orff selected 24 songs from this extensive collection of texts, created by vagabonds, students and itinerant clerics, and arranged them into a kind of libretto. The first part is songs celebrating nature and the awakening spring, the second is praise of Bacchus and the third speaks of the pleasures of love. The motto of the entire piece is the apotheosis of life and the affirmation of the world. Only by agreeing to the order and structure prevailing in the macrocosm will man be able to maintain the purity of his soul and live in harmony with nature.
