Identity is a key issue of our time. We want to be efficient, authentic, and unique. At the same time, we are labeled with illnesses and disorders. In Lars von Trier’s film, a group of misfits escapes boredom, trauma, and mediocrity by pretending to be people with disabilities. Living on welfare, they test the boundaries of social norms while exploring the idea of the “inner idiot.” When their fragile ideology collapses, the group falls apart.
